Flame Surface Pretreatment

Flam treatment machines for activating workpiece surfaces prior to coating

Plastic workpieces can be flame-treated with a gas burner prior to coating to improve the feel. Rather than being a form of heat treatment, flame treatment relies solely on the chemical effect of the gas flame.

How flame treatment machines work

Flame treatment briefly exposes the surface to the direct effect of a gas flame fueled by excess oxygen.

This breaks down the molecular bonds in the surface of the treated substrate and binds any active ions – particularly OH and COOH groups – in the flame. In this way, polar groups are generated in the originally nonpolar material that enable the reliable adhesion of printing inks, coatings, adhesives, and more. The development of polar groups increases the surface energy of the treated substrate, which can also be measured.
